Wilmington has a population of slightly over 70,000, and is the largest city in the state of Delaware, as well as being one of the major centers in the Delaware Valley metro area. Wilmington lies about 25 miles to the southwest of Philadelphia, near to the I-95 and I-295 highways. It can also be reached on SEPTA rail services from Philadelphia.
With strong transport links to the larger city, Wilmington may sometimes seem to be a satellite of Philadelphia, but it has a character and history of its own, and is Delaware’s most important historical city. Nine of the city districts are classed as being Historic Districts. In Quaker Hill one can find the graves of Thomas Garrett, the slavery abolitionist, and John Dickinson, who signed the constitution of the United States. Quaker Hill was founded in the 18th century by the Quakers, Thomas West and William Shipley.
